B. Background Summary:
Vaun is the son of Star Fleet Admiral Noah Vaun and civilian artist
Bonita Deville. He spent his early years as a child living with his
mother on Earth in her family home in the hills of Sausalito, across
the San Francisco Bay from the Star Fleet compound at the Presidio in
San Francisco. He attended private school and was enrolled in a preparatory
academy in San Francisco, graduating with honors before being accepted
into Star Fleet academy at the age of eighteen. He saw his father sporadically
on holidays growing up but spent the better part of three summers in
his early teen years with his father during the senior Vaun's days on
board the USS YAVAPAI.
Graduating from Star Fleet Academy in 2361, commissioned as Ensign and
assigned to the Kirov class USS KUZNETZOV, Vaun made full Lieutenant
in 2366 at the age of 27. During VADM Milton Vaun's early career in
Star Fleet he saw significant action in the Alpha Quadrant. His service
is not well known but well-regarded by those who do know of it. His
assignment to KUZNETZOV ended in 2371, and he accepted assignment to
the DD Class ship USS SEDONA as her Operations Chief. Promoted to Lt.
Commander in 2373, he became SEDONA's First Officer the following year
during the outbreak of hostilities with the Dominion and their allies.
In 2373 the Cardassian Union formed an alliance with the Dominion; the
Federation entered an uneasy alliance with the Romulans and the Klingons
in response. Vaun was promoted to Lt. Commander in 2373 at the age of
33 and Commander in 2374 while serving as XO of USS SEDONA. While engaged
in action with Jem'Hadar forces near Bajor in early 2375, SEDONA's Captain
James T. Morrison was critically wounded, and Vaun was given command
of the ship, a command Vaun held until the conclusion of 2376, when
SEDONA was recalled to base for repairs. In January 2377 Vaun was awarded
the Distinguished Service Medal and a Silver Star for commanding SEDONA
and promoted to the rank of
Captain. He was 37 years old and given a new ship, the Magellan class
CA ship USS COCONINO.
His mother and brother died a day apart in 2375. Milton's mother was
visiting Monroe Vaun at Star Fleet's compound in San Francisco when
the city was attacked by the BREEN's surprise attack on Earth. Both
were critically injured, Monroe dying of his wounds within hours and
their mother succumbing to her wounds the next day. Milton did not learn
of their deaths for two weeks due to a communications blackout during
a sensitive mission inside Cardassian space. He met with his father,
Admiral Noah Vaun, two months later at DS9 for one day and they held
a memorial service. Milton left DS9 the next day, and never saw his
father again, as Admiral Vaun died of natural causes in 2377 in Kingston,
Jamaica, while on shore leave.
COCONINO was put in service along the Cardassian border to monitor post-war
Cardassian activities. After five years of stability in the region,
Coconino was recalled to SB DELTA for maintenance and then assigned
to patrolling the border with the Breen in 2382. Four years later, 2386,
COCONINO was directed to rendezvous with the USS GONODONO in the Beta
Quadrant and escort her back into Federation Space. En route COCONINO
stopped at Earth where Captain Vaun was promoted to Commodore and given
command of ODGREEN FLEET's Cruiser Division Six .
USS COCONINO became the flagship of CD6 and Captain Elian Gonzalez accepted
command of USS COCONINO and continued on mission to meet GONODONO. USS
COCONINO successfully brought back USS GONODONO from its 12 year journey
back to Federation Space after being plucked from the Badlands by a
Delta quadrant entity known only as 'Caretaker'.
Vaun spent the next three years commanding Cruiser Division 6 from Earth.
In the spring of 2389, Vaun suffered a personal tragedy. His wife, while
on vacation with their son Milton Noah Vaun, drowned while exploring
an underwater cave in Mexico. Vaun himself had been unable to join them
on the vacation, and for years burdened himself with the notion that
if he had been with them her death could have been avoided. Not blaming
his son, knowing his son would have saved her if able, Commodore Vaun
still felt if he had been there, with them, she would have been saved.
It was a loss that haunts him to this day.
In April 2389, Vaun accompanied USS COCONINO to make First Contact with
the Beings, inhabitants of Bea, a world within 20 light years of Earth,
a world that demonstrated warp capability independently earlier that
same month. Vaun and a team of Federation scientists and political advisors
spent six weeks with the Being leaders, and came away from the First
Contact having built a foundation of trust and understanding that would
culminate in the Beings becoming a Federation member in March of 2396.
Vaun made several visits to Bea over the period of 2389 through 2396
and became Starfleet's chief liaison with the Being government, in addition
to his duties commanding Cruiser Division Six. In 2397 at the Being
government's request Vaun campaigned for the construction and establishment
of a new Starbase close to Bea, and Starfleet authorized SB KENAI, which
would open in January of 2404.
In January of 2398, Vaun suffered another personal tragedy. His son,
Milton Noah Vaun, at the time a 29 year old civilian scientist serving
on the USS ESCALANTE, was one of the 747 on board when ESCALANTE was
attacked by one of several Borg ships invading Romulan space. The body
of Vaun's son was never recovered and his fate remains unknown. Either
captured by the Borg or killed by them, his whereabouts remain a mystery
to this day.
Vaun suffered a setback of his own in September 2398 when he set forth
on his flagship with Captain Gonzales in command of USS COCONINO in
search of the Borg ship that was suspected of being the one that attacked
USS ESCALANTE. Engaged by the Borg, COCONINO sustained heavy damage
on the bridge before reinforcements arrived to persuade the Borg ship
to cut off its attack. Vaun was severely injured, almost dying from
a head wound, but he recovered after three weeks in a medically induced
coma. He spent six months convalescing at home before he returned to
active duty commanding Cruiser Division Six from San Francisco.
Vaun resumed command of ODGREEN's Cruiser Division Six in February 2399,
but kept a low profile, remaining on Earth except for the monthly visits
to Bea. ODGREEN FLEET headquarters were relocated from Earth to SB KENAI
when SB KENAI opened in 2404. Vaun's Cruiser Division Six headquarters
were also relocated to SB KENAI at that time, and Vaun had to leave
his comfortable home in Sausalito and office in San Francisco for life
on the new starbase. In February of 2404, Vaun was promoted to Real
Admiral and Bea was officially under the protection of ODGREEN FLEET
and Cruise Division Six.
In 2408, Rear Admiral Vaun was ready to move back home. Requesting reassignment
Earthside, Vaun won appointment to Base Commander of the Star Fleet
compound at the Presidio in San Francisco. The move afforded him the
opportunity to return home to the hills of Sausalito and a desk job
across the bay. He spent the next seven years comfortable in that position,
through the transition of the merger of ODGREEN FLEET with GREEN FLEET,
until the summer of 2415, when Admiral Midori Takahashi resigned from
Star Fleet, and Star Fleet Commander in Chief Admiral Conrad Veld persuaded
Milton to take the position of Commander in Chief of GREEN FLEET, in
July 2415. Realizing that taking the CINCGREEN job would mean he'd have
to spend a good part of his time at SB DELTA, it was a position Vaun
almost turned down. But discussing his situation with an old friend,
retired Admiral Bud Palmolive, he was persuaded to take on the challenge,
and accepted the promotion to Vice Admiral, and CINCGREEN. He even sold
his home in Sausalito, exchanging it for an historic home in the Russian
Hill district of San Francisco. The first six months on the job, Vaun
spend most of his time managing the Fleet from offices at the Presidio.
But a year into the job, Vaun spends most of his time at SB DELTA.
C. Personality Summary:
Milton Vaun has spent his life in Star Fleet, and is the son of a Star
Fleet admiral. He has survived the death of both parents, as well as
survived the death of his only brother, the death of his only wife,
and the loss of his only son to the Borg, decades ago. He has a few
close friends but those he has are very close. At this stage in
his life he misses his walks in San Francisco and struggles to adapt
to living on a Starbase again, but sees this stage as just another chapter
in his life. His duty as CINCGREEN consumes his waking hours. He does
enjoy spending an hour every night reading historical novels before
bedtime. He does not mince words.
