Welcome to ASR, the Usenet newsgroup
alt.starfleet.rpg
(also available on the web at
Yahoo! Groups), one of many shared writing experiences in cyberspace.
Here, hundereds of people from all over the world read and write stories
in the universe of Star Trek. Not all of us are die-hard 'Trekkers';
our players come from all walks of life. What brings us together is
the common enjoyment of interactive drama- the opportunity to write
in a cooperative and structured forum. We write shared fiction, where
each person contributes to the story. This is not a place to publish
full sotires- alt.startrek.creative is the venue for that. We offer
instead an organization, a club, if you will.
Everyone starts a character at the rank of ensign
and those who post frequently and constructively are eventually offered
'command' billets and opportunities to participate in administration.
The 'threads' you see represented, called role-playing units, fit under
the administrative umbrella, with commanding officers at the core. This
is not an 'alt.pub' concept where each thread is run independently.
The admirals (administrators) volunteer their free time to oversee the
placement of players and direction of the plots, matching people with
ships, writing styles, stories and themes that suit them best. Therefore,
we ask that you follow our procedures.
The interactive element is what makes this activity
a "game," for want of a better word. We have rules, customs, and structures
for ordering that interaction, to encourage the writing of stories or
role-playing (called 'RP' for short) and to avoid total anarchy, chaos
and conflicts among our writer players. It all runs smoothly, and has
since 1991.
Experience in traditional role-playing games, creative
writing, naval protocol, military decorum, or Star Trek trivia
are **not** required to join or flourish in ASR. We have a structure
in place to help new players become acquainted with our rules and procedures,
and experienced people ready and eager to assist in helping new players
get settled in a Role-Playing Unit. All you need to do is get your hands
on the FAQ list. It can be found in the "New Player's Center"
on the Site Navigation menu of this web site. If you still cannot find
it, however, send an e-mail message to the
Chief of Star Fleet Operations (CSFO) and and state your interest in learning how to
join ASR. It's as simple as that. We are constantly working to improve
the reference materials and web presentation. ASR's strength, however,
is the quality and diversity of the units we offer, not in the supplemental
material.
ASR runs a PBEM (play by e-mail) paradigm)- when you
consider the group, please keep that in mind. We are **not** a Trek
'simm,' and our campaign fabric offers many different perspectives on
the Trek universe.
ASR is totally non-commercial, and does not sanction
use of its facilties to advertise or solicit for any purpose. Content
standards vary across units, but we offer an environment that should
have something for everyone. We welcome new players at all times and
will be happy to answer any questions.
Respectfully,
