Remy LeBeau had entered the medical bay expecting to find a group of logical
officers discussing the condition of the the CAG. What he found was a group
of raving lunatics, at least in his mind, talking about soul-swapping and
rifts in the time-space continuum. Obviously he had been sent there to set
things straight. He had pulled LCDR Toc aside and asked to review the
medical scans.

Before he realized it, everyone present was awaiting an answer from him. He
hated to admit this to himself, so he really hated having to admit it to the
others but he had no idea what had happened. Steeling himself up, he cleared
his throat and said, "The data I've reviewed is incomplete and therefore any
diagnosis would be inconclusive. We need to do further studies before we can
determine what has happened and how to remedy the situation."

*That should keep them happy for the moment* he thought to himself.

Yssar turned to the others present and said, "We should consider consulting
someone who might have more experience with this type of situation."

"Who would you suggest, sir?" Remy asked, not entirely comfortable with
having his authority portioned out.

To answer the question, Yssar tapped his commbadge and said, "LCDR Windstar,
please report to the Fighter Wing Medical Bay."

[On my way, Commander] came the curt reply from the Command Center.

The doors to the medical bay swished open and Tao Windstar strode into the
room, not sure why he had been summoned. On seeing all the others present,
he surmised it was something important. As he entered, a shiver ran down his
spine and he sensed something he hadn't felt in a very long time.

"LCDR Tao Windstar reporting as ordered, sir." No need to break protocol
just because he was among friends.

"Mr. Windstar," Greyclaw began, "I believe Dr. LeBeau and Dr. Toc would like
to show you something." Almost on cue, Toc handed Tao the PADD he had been
holding.

Tao quickly reviewed the data and the bio-readings and whistled.
"Fascinating. These readings are accurate?"

"Very accurate. I took them myself," growled Toc. He meant nothing by the
way he had answered. It was merely that he was Klingon.

Tao took no offense to Toc's tone of voice. It would serve no purpose.
Besides, Tao could sense Toc's frustration at feeling helpless.
Interestingly, he sensed a similar frustration from Remy LeBeau, although he
doubted the Doctor would admit it.

"If these readings are correct, CDR Miller and this Colonel Ray are trapped
in time."

"Ye' mean their souls have been exchanged?" Cort asked as if trying to prove
a point.

"I'm afraid it's a little more than that, Cort. Your theory wouldn't explain
the changes in the CAG's DNA. These two men are existing in two different
times simultaneously." Tao had remembered stories on his own world of the
masters in the Art who could send their essence back in time to observe
events but not interact with them.

"Is his condition terminal?" asked Mirtox, obviously not comfortable with
such esoteric subjects.

"The strain exerted by the rift could kill the both of them, sir." replied
Tao. "I suggest that LT(jg) Sovak be involved in this dilemma. He could
coordinate with Dr. LeBeau and Dr. Toc to find a way to reverse the effects
of the time-space rift. Keeping the Commander anesthetized will prevent
Colonel Ray from suffering severe psychological trauma from interaction with
beings from the twenty-fifth century. More importantly, we must get word to
Commander Miller not to stray too far from his point of arrival in that
other time, otherwise we might not be able to retrieve him."

"And how do we do that? I doubt a subspace radio will reach that far,"
jested Cort, trying to use humor to hide his growing concern for the CAG.

"No, LT O'Wood, a subspace radio wouldn't 'reach that far'," answered Tao
with a slight spark in his eye. "On the other hand, it may be possible for
me to contact CDR Miller. If I could establish a mental link, I might be
able to communicate with the Commander. Theoretically, he would be the only
one who could see or hear me as I would be in his mind."

"Sounds pretty dangerous, Tao," added Greyclaw.

"It will be, sir, but it may be the only way we can keep the CAG from
straying too far from the retrieval point. Dr. Toc and Dr. LeBeau can
monitor my lifesigns and awaken me if there are any signs of serious danger.
It is the only way." Tao watched as the others contemplated what could go
wrong, knowing the final decision was up to CDR Yssar.

Greyclaw knew his decision could endanger the life of his XO as well as that
of the CAG, but he also trusted Tao implicitly and knew if anyone could pull
it of, it was Tao. He made no attempts to fool others into believing he
understood Tao's abilities, but he knew what had to be done.

"Do what you need to get our CAG back. And Mr. Windstar, be careful. I don't
particularly like the thought of having to request another XO from INDIGO.
They'll think I'm going through first officers like water," he joked.

Tao acknowledged his concern and was honored by his CO. He took the two
doctors aside and explained what they needed to watch and how they could try
to pull him back if trouble arose. Then he took up a seat at the head of the
biobed holding the sleeping CAG. He placed his hands on CDR Miller's temples
and closed his eyes. Reaching out with the tendrils of his mind, he sought
out the CAG's essence and followed it back through the rift.

CDR Miller sat in the makeshift hospital ward where he had first awakened,
not sure of what was going on. He had tried to speak with a nurse earlier
but that had only managed to convince them he was raving mad and had
probably suffered a severe blow to the head. He wasn't so sure they weren't
right.

Suddenly he had a feeling someone was watching him. He turned to find
himself staring at the pale, transparent image of a man, a man with golden
hair and blue eyes. He knew the man, yet some primal urge inside of him made
him leap away in fear. A nurse came running over and asked, "Colonel Ray,
are you alright?"

"Don't you see him?" asked Miller. "A slender man with golden hair and blue
eyes like sapphires. He's standing right over there," he finished, pointing
to where Tao's image was standing.

The nurse humored him and took a look, finding nothing out of the ordinary.
Helping him down into the bed, she said, "Stay here and rest, Colonel. I'll
have the doctor come see you as soon as he can."

After the nurse left, Tao smiled at the CAG and said, Commander Miller, it's
me, Tao Windstar."

The name rung a bell in 'Pappy's' mind. After a moment of confusion,
recognition dawned on his face. "Tao? Where am I?"

"From what we can tell, you're trapped between two times and worlds. We are
trying to find a way to get you back, but you must remember to stay where
you are, otherwise we might not be able to retrieve you."

"It's getting hard to remember things. I almost didn't recognize you."

Tao frowned at the information. "Your two essences are merging. I'll do what
I can to slow the process, but you must try to keep your wits about you."

Miller rubbed his eyes and squinted. "How come I can see you but the nurse
couldn't?"

"Because I am in your mind. I am not physically present in that time frame
except as far as your mind is. Remember, you mustn't move too far from this
location. I will do my best to keep your essence seperate from Colonel Ray's
for as long as I can."

Josh: Care to take it from here. This could be alot of fun.

All: This gives us something else to do until the computer virus in sickbay
strikes on FMD 7. I wonder what havoc that will wreak on this little
predicament <VBG>
